One of the most difficult situations I have as a photographer, to be honest, is taking pictures of my own children. Not necessarily taking the pictures, but not having the guidance I give my own clients when it comes to choosing and displaying photos. My son is 7 and my daughter is almost 2 (wow, time goes by fast!). They are both at *wonderful* and fun ages right now to photograph. Granted, the almost 2 year old is more difficult than the 7 year old ;) But then I ask myself (and many of my clients ask me the same question)- when is the best time to photograph your child? The answer is simple- now. Right now. There is never a wrong time.

As you know, we moved to Portland recently, and now that we are finally getting settled (I suppose- there’s always so much to do, so when someone says they are settled, does that mean they have nothing left to do? Because if so, we do still have boxes in our garage), I have been working on decorating the house. Of course, this involves photographs of the kids. I must say, I wish I had someone to guide me through the process as I guide my clients- someone to be honest about what will work and what won’t. Looking in from the outside is SO much easier.

As I have been in the process of going through old files and negatives, I’ve found some favorites of my son throughout the years that I would like to share. He turned 7 in November, and is definitely growing up. As hard as I thought he was to photograph years ago, I am so glad I have these memories of him. It’s amazing to go back and remember him at those times. So when people say photographs are priceless- they really are. These are memories that I can only experience through looking at these photos.

Seven years and two kids later my memory is not as good as I would have hoped. I don’t remember my son’s first steps. I don’t remember things that I don’t have written in his baby book  or that I don’t have documents through photographs and video. I remember things vaguely, but when I look through old photographs- the memories come rushing back.

I’d like to share a few photographs of my son from some film I scanned in:

If you’re thinking about scheduling a photography session, and wondering when- do it now. If you keep telling yourself you need to pull out your own camera or video camera more- do it now. Don’t wait. Keep these memories with you forever, time goes by way too fast.

It was this little one’s birthday, and she was so 1 year old :) Definitely interested in everything. It was a gorgeous day in Portland, and I really enjoyed the lovely views from this park.

Here are a few from the session:

Happy New Year Portland!

January 4, 2010

I hope everyone has had a great holiday season, and a happy new year so far. The holidays have been wonderful this year (our first season in Portland, OR, and we are *loving* every minute!), and I am definitely looking forward to whatever 2010 has to bring! Photography by Amber is officially open again now that the holidays have passed. Please keep watching for our Valentine’s Special, which I will blog about in the next couple of days.

I know, I know, we just made it through Christmas, New Year’s, etc, but if you’re looking to get some photos done for that special someone, family, etc, you will totally want to take advantage of this offer ;)

Again, I hope everyone has enjoyed themselves this holiday season, and may 2010 bring only the best!

I know a lot of photographers who aren’t necessarily “fans” of photographing toddlers. I must admit it is a difficult age. Not just to photograph, but in general. I know. I have one. This little girl was about the same age as my own, and seriously reminded me of my daughter. Except not as loud. :)

I must admit, I LOVE photographing toddlers. Yes, they can be difficult at times, but not intentionally- it’s just part of being a toddler. They are so fun to interact with, each with their own unique personality. I’ve had *many* parents tell me that they have avoided bringing their child to get photographed because they are difficult/at a difficult age/etc. So, those of you who think you have a difficult child, and have been avoiding a photo session because of it- bring them on over- it will be better than you think! I promise.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful fall. The colors are GORGEOUS here in Oregon, and my kids are loving the leaves everywhere. My son was so excited to bring home different color leaves from school. He hasn’t seen the color change in the last couple years we have been in southern California!

We, of course, went to the pumpkin patch and had a blast. My daughter is apparently not too fond of the big pumpkins in large groups- so that was interesting to say the least! Also, yesterday we went to Wilderness Park in West Linn to play in the leaves and walk the trails. It’s a beautiful park, and I highly recommend it. The kids LOVED it. My daughter would chase after anyone walking their dog, my son wanted to make the biggest leaf pile ever (which, of course, his little sister would not allow this to happen ;) ). It’s a great place to go with the family and just walk around, check out the nature and beauty of the area.

Also, we have officially reached 100 fans on facebook, so the drawing for the free session will be tonight! If you want to be included, you still have until this evening to become a fan. I’m so excited and I would like to say thanks to all fans- also, keep checking back for more news and specials from Photography by Amber.

Here’s some quick photos from the pumpkin patch and playing in the leaves (mainly my daughter, a post for my son will be soon, there’s big news for him I can’t wait to share!)

If you have small children, I would HIGHLY suggest getting one of the Radio Flyer Wagons like the one my daughter is in below..SO great, and she prefers it over the stroller.
